    Unit 4 Leisure Time

    I. Teaching aims
    Learn how to talk about leisure time activities, particularly with reference to your interests;
    Learn how to obtain or understand similar information from others;
    Learn how to describe events such as international conference

    II. Important and difficult points
    1. Important points: Words and expressions: dinner party, have a question to ask, in the moonlight,
    Mid-Autumn Day, ball game, be close to, be good at, get in, have a swim;
    Grammar: have, imperative
    2. Difficult points: Learn how to talk about leisure time activities, particularly with reference to your interests;
    Learn how to describe events such as international conference;
    Learn how to obtain or understand similar information from others;

    III. Teaching methods and instruments: task-based, communicative and grammar teaching; textbook, blackboard, CD, PPT, tape recorder.

    IV. Time allotment
    I). Total time for this unit: 10 periods = 45×10=450 minutes
    II). Detailed time allotment:
    1. Listening and Speaking (book 1): Unit 5 – 6: 2 periods = 45 × 2=90 minutes
    2. Elementary Book: Unit 4
    Listen and talk: 2 periods = 45 × 2=90 minutes
    Passage A: 2 periods = 45 × 2=90 minutes
    Passage B: 2 periods = 45 × 2=90 minutes
    Passage C: 2 periods = 45 × 2=90 minutes

    V. Teaching procedures

    Step 1 Listen and talk (90 minutes)
    1.1 Dialogues
    Words and expressions
    1) take a picture: take a photograph
    e.g. Are we allowed to take a picture in the museum?
    2) all right: very well (used as a reply to a question or to introduce a declaration)
    e.g. -- “Will you join us?”---“All right.” --“你想加入我们吗?”--“好的。”
    1.2. Monologue
    Words and expressions
    1) thankful adj. grateful
    e.g. We cannot be thankful enough to you for your timely and selfless help.
    2) be nervous about: be tense about
    e.g. I am always nervous about taking an English examination.

    Step 2 Passage A and grammar
    1. Passage A
    1.1 pre-reading
    1) Ask the students to scan passage A and find out the difficult points for themselves.
    2) Finish “Read and judge” on p59.
    1.1 while-reading
    Explain the passage sentence by sentence to the students.
    Words and expressions:
    1) Mid-Autumn (festival): middle of the autumn; a traditional Chinese festival
    e.g. The moon is brighter than usual on Mid-Autumn Day.
    2) a few: several 若干,几个
    e.g. A few of my old friends are here in Neijiang Normal University
    3) symbolize: v. be a mark, object of 象征,代表
    e.g. A dove symbolizes peace.
    A cross symbolizes a mistake.

    Finish exercises on Pp.59-60
