    Unit 3 Introducing and Describing People
    I. Teaching aims
    1. Teach students how to introduce and describe people;
    2. Teach students how to exchange opinions on these items with others;
    3. Teach students how use language relating to introducing and describing people;
    4. Review grammar: articles, future tense.

    II. Important and difficult points
    1. Important points: Words and expressions: be skilled in a little bit so (much) that not only….but also share….with in pain in good health have….as; Grammar: articles, future tense
    2. Difficult points: How to introduce and describe people
    How to exchange information and views on name, age, sex, nationality, origin, job, family, character and physical appearance with others.

    III. Teaching methods and instruments: task-based, communicative and grammar teaching; textbook, blackboard, CD, PPT, tape recorder.

    IV. Time allotment
    I). Total time for this unit: 10 periods = 45×10=450 minutes
    II). Detailed time allotment:
    1. Listening and Speaking (book 1): Unit 5 – 6: 2 periods = 45 × 2=90 minutes
    2. Elementary Book: Unit 3
    Listen and talk: 2 periods = 45 × 2=90 minutes
    Passage A: 2 periods = 45 × 2=90 minutes
    Passage B: 2 periods = 45 × 2=90 minutes
    Passage C: 2 periods = 45 × 2=90 minutes

    Teaching procedures

    Step 1 Listen and talk (90 minutes)
    1. Dialogue A)
    1) First listening: Exercise 1 on p.42
    2) Second listening: Repeat after the recording.
    3) Ask the students to change the dialogue according to the fact with a partner.
    Words and expressions
    earn v. to get money for work that you do
    e.g. Mary said “Excuse me” when she stepped on my foot.
    It’s not easy to earn money.
    valuable adj. very useful or important.
    e.g. Your advice is valuable.
    The book provides valuable information.
    2. Dialogue B
    1) First listening: Exercise 2 on p.42
    2) Second listening: Repeat after the recording.
    3) Ask the students to change the dialogue according to the fact with a partner.
    3. Monologue
    1) First listening: Exercise 3 on p.42
    2) Second listening: Repeat after the recording.
    3) Ask the students to adapt the monologue according to their own situation.

    Step 2 Passage A and grammar
    1. Passage A
    1.1 pre-reading
    1) Ask the students to scan passage A and find out the difficult points for themselves.
    2) Finish “Read and judge” on p45.
    1.1 while-reading
    Explain the passage sentence by sentence to the students.
    Words and expressions:
    1) begin with: start with
    e.g. The speaker began his speech with an old saying.
    Let’s begin with an English song.
    2) overweitht adj. weighing more than is normal, necessary, or allowed
    e.g. This parcel is overweight by two kilos.
    I think I’ll eat less. I’m a little bit overweight.
    3) would like to: want to
    e.g. It is very late now and we would like to go home.
    4) so … that …
    e.g. She described the events so vividly that I could almost see them.
    The bus is so full that I could hardly turn around.
    5) be skilled in: be good at; do well in
    e.g. She was skilled enough in French to translate a novel.
    Not many men are skilled in knitting.
    6) not only … but also …: used to emphasize that sth. else is also true; both… and…
    e.g. Not only the girls but also the boys in our class are very nice!
    Not only the players but also the coach looked very excited.
    1.2 post-reading
    Finish exercises on p.45
    2. Grammar
    Review the usage of articles.
    Finish the exercises 1-2 on p.52.
